GQ uses a male star vehicle but cosmopolitan uses a female star vehicle
cosmopolitan is more cluttered while GQ is more arranged professionally
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GQ is made to feel more masculine and talks about male sports hobbies and interests with the star vehicle being a man that somebody male would like to be like in cosmopolitan it is arranged the same way with female interests hobbies and other stereotypical female things the star is also a person a female audience would like to be like or live like hence it being a lifestyle magazine as you would want to have the lifestyle of the star vehicle but these magazines are vastly different by there colour schemes text and all the similarities as they are catered to the opposite gender

exam style magazine question
lo: to write and structure an effective exam style answer π€
compare the representation of gender in the cosmopolitan front cover and the GQ front cover
25 MARKS
the two covers represent gender very differently cosmopolitan represents tom daley in an anti stereotypical way for example he has been dressed in more feminine clothing colour or style however as a gay man this is more stereotypical on the other hand there are more stereotypical masculine representations with the tattoo and the muscular physique
The magazine GQ represents gender very differently to cosmopolitan GQ uses Rihanna on there cover which is unusual for a male magazine she represented naked with snake hair and other snake related things. this could connote that they are representing women as sly as sneaky and deceiving they representing Rihanna as medusa which is a greek myth about a woman who was too confident in her looks and believed she was the most beautiful, she was turned into an ugly monster as punishment if anyone was to look at her they would turn to stone. This could suggest that they are protraying woman as monsters or forbidden as you cant look at medusa or punishing like medusa in the story.
The representation of gender in both magazines is similar as they both are representing rebellious anti stereotypical representations Cosmopoitan is seen as a female magazine but uses a male star vehicle and gq a male magazine has a female star vehicle.

in this magazine gender is represented as courageous in this magazine Barack Obama is described as the leader of the free world this suggests that Obama is brave as he is said to be leading the "world" this could be saying that stereotypically men are leaders or brave where the magazine says "free" this could infer Obama is has a greater amount of thinking this is also backed up they are celebrating "the best and the brightest" this might be using the stereotype of men are smarter but on the other hand it is celebrating the MEN OF THE YEAR so i dont think that is what it is referring to in this magazine he is using direct address this conveys a warm kind of outgoing personality which breaks the stereotype of nerdy or smart traditional people are antisocial and shy and do not have very many friends or keep to themselves showing Obama as a very capable person "leader of the free world" could also being referring to how Obama is a former president of the united states also painting him as capable and extremely clever which could again go back to men being smart Obama is wearing a pin with the American flag on it which is again referring to his former presidency and his connection to the country to the left there is a list of people from top to bottom with Obama is at the top maybe suggesting Obama is the smartest man enforced by things like "live smart" above it and where it says starring not Obama but the leader of the free world again going back to the point of him being this mega capable clever person.

explore how this front cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate meanings
Raheem Sterling {RS}
this front cover uses media language to communicate that RS is attractive RS uses the stereotypical masculine pose of legs far apart and arms towards his crotch this pose connotes power and confidence complimenting his attractiveness the camera is positioned below his waist which shows that he is above the average person in looks it could also could be focusing on his crotch area which is a point of attraction for women {and men if your into that} backed up by his hand position almost saying he is pointing at that area his facial expression which is using direct address which could also connote confidence with his body and just in general has a serious expression which can be seen as attractive him looking down could also be saying he is looking down could be saying he again is above the average joe in attractiveness but he also might be looking down at his nether regions which can once again be linked to being attractive or maybe its saying the reader is short as hell him having wings connoting he is an angel quoted from the cover where it calls him a "guardian angel" angels are normally seen as handsome attractive beautiful creatures which might say RS is as handsome as an angel on his neck and arms he is wearing many items which look obviously expensive telling the audience he is very wealthy which is also an attractive quality in a man having a lot of money and being successful and good at what you do

Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the right of every child to receive an education. She was born in the Swat Valley in Pakistan. When the Islamic Taliban movement took control of the valley in 2008, girls’ schools were burned down. Malala kept a diary of the events, which was published in 2009 by BBC Urdu. In her diary she spoke out against the Taliban’s terrorist regime. An American documentary film made Malala internationally famous.
It was not long before the Taliban threatened her life. In 2012, Malala was shot in the head on a school bus by a Taliban gunman. She survived, but had to flee to England and live in exile there because a fatwa was issued against her.
In 2013, TIME magazine named Malala one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World.” On her 16th birthday she spoke in the United Nations. In her speech Malala called for the equal right to education for girls all over the world, and became a symbol of this cause.

The GQ and details magazines are both similar and different in the details magazine Robert pattinson is shown to be attractive as a woman is seen to be swooning over him while Raheem is shown to be attractive through him showing his musclular physique and him being overall pretty handsome the details cover has Robert pattinson down low while the camera angle in the GQ magazine is below Raheem sterling to show raheems power and status both of them are shown as stereotypically masculine being muscly attractive and having women basically being controlled by Robert which suggests that gender is being represented in details as unequal as Robert seems to be the more authoritative figure in the magazine while sterling’s magazine shows gender as very strong shown by his physique and facial expression which is a stern stare of sorts

Malala otherwise known as Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan she spoke out against the Taliban who occupied the area she lived about the rights to woman's education on a bus she was shot in the side of the head and survived to win a nobel peace prize in 2014 she would be on the magazine as she is a woman of integrity and she is famous
red could signify blood as she was shot
extraordinary could be saying she is above the average person
her clothes blends in with the background to make malala the main star
legend suggests what she did was out of a storybook painting her as heroic
red connotes passion and malala is very passionate about her cause womens education

direct address connotes confidence and bravery while muslim women are stereotypically timid and shy
malala looks very feminine classy and sophisticated looks quite stereotypically female
ethnicity and gender are reepresented as powerful in this magazine, in this cover malala uses direct address which connotes confidence which would make her be quite brave she also wears jewlery which could be connoting her as wealthy which is power her headscarf shows that she is religous which could mean she is a powerful woman of culture and religon

THREE WORDS to describe how gender is represented on this cover
learning objective
both have red that connotes bravery and passion
one has a wide shot one has a mid shot which connotess freindliness while wide shot connotes distance
there both vogue
they both connote empowerment
Homework
Malalas direct address connotes bravery and confidence
Red connotes passion
Headscarf shows her religion and connection to that maybe saying she is very spiritual
Survivor makes her seem very tough and strong minded And strong in general
Activist connotes she is ready to do things to speak out or is ready to do anything
Legend connotes she is a thing of fairytale she is so moral like she is a hero which also backs up her being strong
Extraordinary connotes she is amazing that she is different or unique from other people shown from “extra ordinary”
Her clothes being the same red as the background makes Malala the main focus as well the text but the vogue text being grey makes it less easy to see making other parts more important
She is seen as innocent as she is not portrayed similarly to other women star vehicles on vogue which are normally seen as very glamourised and Beauty related but Malala is shown as simply legendary and amazing
The fabric she wears and the jewlery could be a sign of wealth which we know vogue is a high end expensive fashion based magazine could also show her as powerful
Mid shot makes her the centre of attention showing her high status which vogue is known for
Both the title vogue and the words “survivor activist legend” are in grey so malalas name and other cover lines stand out in white complimenting how they make Malala seem to be unique or stand out by making her name face and description stand out and make her look different and unique

malala vogue

strong
similarities
they both are shown as powerful
both are confident
both are female
differences
one is using direct address one is not using direct address
one is shown as glamorous but the other is just shown as amazing and cool
one is religious one is sinful
one has the masthead in front one has behind
ones name is in the centre one is on the side
The two magazine covers are more different than similar both cover stars are shown as powerful Kim k is shown as powerful via her pose and expression she is not using direct address connoting she doesn't care and her pose shows her as above the reader showing status and power. Malala is described as a legend and characters or people that are described as legendary are said to be strong powerful brave which shows how Malala could be seen as powerful.
A difference between these covers could be one is shown as very glamorous while the other shows Malala as amazing in the Kim k cover Kim is all make upped and wears revealing clothing she also is holding her leg in a feminine way while Malala is wearing a nice robe and headscarf witch only shows her face and hands she is also said to be "extraordinary" which means she is extra unique which would make her seen as amazing
One more difference is that Malala is shown as religious and holy while Kim k is shown as sinful in the vogue cover Malala's religion and beliefs has a quite prominent role in the cover as she wears a headscarf which is a large part of some religions and she is shown as innocent which holy women stereotypically are while Kim is shown in revealing clothing loads of makeup not much on her legs and a sexual feel and expression of her looking away from the camera in the bible it is said that you must avoid sexual immortality because it has a lasting effect meaning what Kim is doing is sinful and against god
One last difference is that Kim k is shown as stereotypically feminine while Malala is anti stereotypical when it comes to femininity in the Kim k cover pink is used and she is shown as beauty orientated which is stereotypically feminine while Malala is shown as brave strong and legendary from the cover lines "survivor activist legend" cause stereotypically girls are shown as weak and timid and beautiful but Malala is shown as tough and hard and brave and not scared unlike Kim k
In my opinion there are more differences between the covers than similarities as they are two very different people
